Musk, Trump, and the Future of Politics within AI: A Rivalry with Global Implications

Political Future 2024

From Foes to Friends

In a dramatic shift from their past tensions, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have formed an influential alliance that promises to reshape both the political and technological landscape. In 2017, Musk had openly criticized Trump, branding him a “con man” and “one of the world’s best bullshitters.” However, by 2024, their relationship has transformed into a symbiotic partnership, with Musk now part of Trump’s inner circle. The two have been spotted together at Mar-a-Lago, and Musk has become a trusted advisor to the former president. This alliance has the potential to disrupt the U.S. government, as both Musk and Trump share a vision to radically slash bureaucracy, challenge entrenched liberal ideologies, and deregulate industries in the name of fostering economic growth.

Musk’s advisory role in the Trump administration includes participation in a new body called DOGE, which is tasked with trimming government spending. Already in contact with foreign leaders, Musk’s growing influence within the political sphere has led to speculation that he may play a key role in shaping policy decisions. This kind of influence is not unprecedented—historically, tycoons such as John D. Rockefeller and J.P. Morgan wielded similar power in shaping American economics. However, what sets Musk apart is the global nature of his business empire, which includes Tesla, SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter), and xAI, an artificial intelligence company. These companies are relatively small compared to the giants of the past, but Musk’s ventures have a far-reaching impact on the global economy.

Musk's Disruptive Vision

Musk’s companies rely on technological innovation to reduce costs and disrupt existing markets, a characteristic that defines his business strategy. Unlike previous monopolists who relied on controlling prices or consolidating power within banking and finance, Musk has made his mark by applying technology to drive down costs and increase efficiency. His disruptive philosophy extends beyond business and into politics, as Musk views government regulations and bureaucracies as major impediments to innovation. Musk’s growing political involvement is rooted in his belief that government intervention often stifles progress and that a more libertarian approach would fuel growth, particularly in industries like space exploration and electric vehicles.

Both Musk and Trump aim to overhaul the federal government, with Musk advocating for cutting as much as $2 trillion from the annual budget and eliminating various government agencies. While such goals may appear ambitious and even unrealistic, they reflect the broader frustration with Washington's inefficiencies. With the federal debt approaching 100% of GDP, and spending growing at unsustainable rates, reform is necessary. The U.S. military, particularly the Pentagon, is in need of modernization, especially in adapting to new technologies such as drones and AI. Musk’s vision of cutting costs could significantly benefit the country, especially if it leads to greater efficiency within the government. However, there are significant risks associated with Musk’s influence.

One major concern is the potential for cronyism and corruption. Musk’s businesses operate in industries that have become crucial to U.S. national security, particularly with the growing rivalry between the U.S. and China. Musk’s proximity to power could allow him to manipulate regulations and tariffs, potentially benefiting his companies at the expense of competitors. His influence could even create an environment ripe for monopolistic behavior, where the line between business and government becomes dangerously blurred. In fact, since September, the market value of Musk’s businesses has skyrocketed, with investors speculating that Musk’s political ties could give him an edge in securing lucrative government contracts.

Musk's Geopolitical Challenges

Moreover, Musk’s track record outside of his core industries is far from flawless. His controversial decisions regarding the Starlink satellite service in Ukraine and his comments on Taiwan have raised questions about his judgment in international matters. Musk’s personal wealth, heavily tied to his business in China, could also expose him to geopolitical risks and manipulation. As the merger of politics and business becomes more intertwined, the potential for Musk to make erratic decisions or overreach in areas outside his expertise grows, especially given his penchant for working in isolation and his sometimes erratic behavior.

While Musk’s political career may be short-lived, the long-term effects of his involvement in shaping U.S. government policy could have lasting consequences. If his efforts to reform the government fail, it could set back attempts at budgetary reform for years. Additionally, his rise to power could normalize the growing trend of oligarchs influencing political decisions, a dynamic that is increasingly seen in many parts of the world. As the government plays a more direct role in industries like trade, technology, and industrial policy, the risks of state capture by wealthy elites are rising.

Musk vs. Altman

In the tech industry, Musk’s rivalry with OpenAI founder Sam Altman is similarly intense. Musk, who helped establish OpenAI, has since distanced himself from the company, and his new AI venture, xAI, has become a direct competitor to OpenAI. The competition between these two tech moguls has intensified as Musk seeks to position xAI as a major player in the artificial intelligence space. Musk’s company is already valued at $50 billion, and it has been aggressively expanding its infrastructure, including the creation of the world’s largest supercomputer in Memphis. Musk’s ultimate goal is to develop AI that can support his broader ambitions, such as autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots.

xAI, while still an underdog compared to OpenAI, has significant advantages, including Musk’s ability to attract top talent and access to massive amounts of data from Tesla and X. However, OpenAI’s strategic partnership with Microsoft gives it an edge in terms of resources and market share, commanding roughly 70% of the large language model (LLM) market. Musk has not shied away from using legal means to challenge OpenAI’s dominance, filing multiple lawsuits accusing the company and Microsoft of anti-competitive behavior. Some of OpenAI’s investors are concerned that Musk’s ties to Trump could allow him to use political leverage to stifle OpenAI’s competition through regulatory channels.

Ultimately, this intense rivalry between Musk and Altman, fueled by personal grievances and business competition, is creating a high-stakes battle in the AI industry. Musk’s aggressive approach, combined with his political influence, is turning what should be healthy competition into a tense and potentially destructive fight. The stakes are high, not just for Musk and Altman, but for the future of AI development, with both companies vying for dominance in a rapidly evolving field. This rivalry could ultimately have far-reaching implications for the future of artificial intelligence and its role in the global economy.
