It was Sarah’s experience as a real estate broker that made her see how useful a database focused on apartments would be to all segments of the industry. She perceived a market niche and proceeded to create the product to fill it.
 
Sarah started her career in investment sales specializing in apartments because it was the food group of commercial real estate that other brokers in her office didn’t want to claim. “I avoided the vicious competition from outside brokers by being one of the few willing to drive one hundred and fifty miles away to pursue the many turn key construction deals available in California’s central valley markets." These days, Sarah prefers pro forma models and data comparison analysis in the comfort of her air-conditioned office over tire kicking and multi-hundred unit walk throughs.
 
A city girl, she grew up in Manhattan and regularly practices the renters lifestyle by choice industry mantra. “Not too many people in our business actually want to live in the communities they buy, finance, construct and sell.” But this is not the case for Sarah. She has lived in apartment buildings most of her life and not because she can’t afford another option. “It’s a way of life that agrees with me”, says Sarah. “I can decide what is right for me in terms of price and location but make a different decision because I want a change of lifestyle or want to be within walking distance to my daughter’s new school.” Sarah says she could be tempted to buy if the right opportunity presented itself, in the same way she might marry again if the right person were to appear.   Now that her daughter is almost ready for college, Sarah is considering rental opportunities abroad “I appreciate art, history and architecture, so I might want to rent a house in Casco Viejo. I can’t imagine I’d know for sure what country I’d want to reside until I’ve rented a place for at least six months.” With the option to telecommute, she may decide to rent several different places around the globe and get to live in Paris, Ireland, Belize, Nepal, Shanghai and of course, her near native San Francisco.
